We are part of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge (UK) and are based at the Heart and Lungs Research Institute (HLRI) on the biomedical campus.

The problem
Computing is an essential component of modern science, and it comes with significant, but not always well-understood, environmental impacts. E.g. the global carbon footprint of data centres is estimated to be equivalent to the entire US commercial aviation, and individual scientific projects commonly reach tonnes, if not kilotonnes, of CO2e (for context, the IPCC target to keep global warming under 1.5C is 2 TCO2e/year/person). This is particularly concerning as the need for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI is predicted to rise sharply in the next 1-2 years and beyond.
Bridging the gap
Work on the sustainability of data centres and computing hardware is not new, for decades manufacturers, data centre operators and computer scientists have been tackling this issue. However, until recently, there was very little involvement of end-users: scientists, from astrophysics to bioinformatics, didn’t play a role in the sustainability of their work. As a result, while more tools have become available to track our carbon footprint, computational science still lags behind when it comes to understanding and reducing its environmental impacts. We aim to bridge the gap between the hardware/infrastructure and computational science communities so that environmental impacts can successfully be mitigated.
What we do: the Green Algorithms Initiative, Green DiSC and more
Over the past few years, we developed the Green Algorithms Initiative, a world-leading project in the field of green computing focusing on quantifying and reducing the environmental impacts of computational science. The tools and frameworks developed and maintained by the group are used internationally and include the popular Green Algorithms online calculator, server-specific monitoring tools and the GREENER Principles for Environmentally Sustainable Computational Science. The group has a strong commitment to making all tools available open access to the computing community. The Green Algorithms Initiative has received both nominations and awards for its contributions to environmentally sustainable research (e.g. HDR-UK Impact Award).
Our work also supports community building (through the ESCS Community, more on this soon) and funders’ sustainability policies (see this European agreement for example).
We also manage Green DiSC, the first free and open-access sustainability certification scheme for computational researchers. It provides a roadmap for individuals and organisations alike to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of their computing activities.

About Cambridge

Cambridge is located around 55 miles north of London and has a population of ~180,000 people. Within Cambridge, most traffic is done by bike: the city is very flat and has the highest level of cycle use in the UK (apparently).
Transports: there are direct trains to London King’s Cross (50min) and Stansted Airport is also nearby (30 miles and quick direct trains). A new station, Cambridge South, is also expected to open ~100m from our office sometime in 2025!

The University Accommodation Service helps staff, students and visiting scholars who are affiliated to the University in their search for suitable accommodation in Cambridge. The BRC is at the centre of an immense amount of industry and academic activity. Ten minutes north is the Cambridge Station tech precinct which houses leading data science and AI companies, such as Microsoft Research, Amazon, Apple and Samsung AI. A short bus/cab ride south is the Wellcome Genome Campus, home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute, EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute, Genomics England and others. A 45 minute train south is the London King’s Cross tech precinct, which includes the Alan Turing Institute, Google’s London Headquarters, DeepMind and the Francis Crick Institute.

Cambridge is at the heart of the high-technology Silicon Fen or Cambridge Cluster, which contains industries such as software and bioscience and many start-up companies born out of the university. Over 40 per cent of the workforce have a higher education qualification, more than twice the national average. The city, like most of the UK, has a maritime climate highly influenced by the Gulf Stream. Located in the driest region of Britain, Cambridge’s rainfall averages around 570 mm (22.44 in) per year, around half the national average. Owing to its low-lying, inland, and easterly position within the British Isles, summer temperatures tend to be somewhat higher than areas further west, and often rival or even exceed those recorded in the London area. Typically the temperature will reach 25.1 °C (77.2 °F) or higher on over 25 days of the year over the 1981–2010 period.
