Projects
Our projects are a combination of open-source tools, sustainability research projects, and policy work, all aiming to enable and promote environmentally sustainable computing.
This project aims to bridge the gap between sustainable computing and computational scientists by building tools and frameworks for carbon footprint estimation and reduction.
In this study, we collect and analyse empirical evidence of how AI adversely impacts human and planetary health using a variety of methods.
We are using a computational test bench to run scientific workloads and benchmarks while monitoring the power usage of different components and the full system. These experiments provide the empirical data required to improve the accuracy and validity of the foundational models underlying the various Green Algorithm tools.
We are running an international multi-centre study to compare the effectiveness of different types of feedback from carbon tracking tools for reducing the environmental impact of computational research. This trial will involve different user groups, leveraging a new open source dashboard for high-performance computing (HPC) that we have built.
The first free and open-access sustainability certification scheme for computational researchers, Green DiSC provides a roadmap to individuals and organisations to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of their computational work.
The ESCS Community provides a space for computational scientists in all fields to discuss and improve the environmental sustainability of their work.
Funders play a key role in incentivising sustainable behaviours and setting quality thresholds for science. We engage with funders across Europe to help them in this endeavour.
